Review: Angels Advocate Tour (Las Vegas)

Mariah has obviously saved the best for last.Anyone present during the last show of this superdiva's "Angels Advocate Tour" at the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas (February 27) would agree that it was arguably the finest in the 8-week north American tour which kicked off in New York in early January. All the element that makes a Mariah show fantabulously great was on point: Golden voice? Check. Glamorous ensemble? In the bag. Excessive diva behavior? In full display. Sold-out crowd? Screaming for more. Festive lambs? All dolled up for the night.Fans started arriving as early as 6pm in the venue, even though the concert was billed to start at 9pm (and they all know Mariah would be fabulously late). True to form, the opening act, RydazNArtist, didn't start performing until it was 9pm. Then it was back to waiting. The audience counted the minutes patiently at first, listening to Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Boyz II Men. An hour later at 10:10pm when Mariah still has not showed up, the crowd went restless and started booing--they really did want to hear Mariah badly. As expected, the more than 4,000-strong crowd went wild when the angelic superstar finally did come down from the heavens--quite literally, as she was lowered down from the top wearing a ruffled golden gown that later transformed into a skin-tight, barely-there ensemble (but it's Mariah, do we expect anything less, or rather more fabric?).Hardcore fans who have been following the tour through bootleg recordings over at YouTube didn't get any surprises when Mariah did her usual setlist beginning with "Daydream Interlude," "Shake it off" and "Touch my body."Knowing, however, that there was a wide demographic of people in the audience (from grandma and grandpa to 4-year-old children), Mariah quickly served back-to-back ballads with "Don't forget about us" and "Fly like a bird"--both from the megamillion selling "The Emancipation of Mimi."But since this tour was launched in support of her latest studio effort, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," Mariah, of course, performed several tracks from the album including the smash hit "Obsessed" and the love-making track "The Impossible."Mariah also did "Angels cry" and "Up out my face," both of which appear in remixed form on the upcoming remix album "Angels Advocate," in which the tour was named after. In past shows, Mariah also performed "It's a wrap," "H.A.T.E.U.," "I want to know what love is" and "100%"--the first three included in "Memoirs" while the last rumored to be a bonus track in the remix album. What's surprising with this show in this tour is that Mariah made more adlibs, cooing and hitting difficult notes without hesitation--enough to make the most skeptic critics to eat their words. Mariah even did several impromptu lines with Trey Lorenz, one of her back-up singers, before the latter performed Jackson's "Rock with you" while Mariah goes backstage for a costume change.Between festive costume changes and "splashes of champagne" (she made no bones about drinking alcohol because she said "we're in Vegas and I assume everyone is old enough to have a drink"), Mariah also sang the classics like "Always be my baby," "My all," and "Make it happen." Mariah also did some uptempo numbers such as "Honey," "It's like that," and the revamped "Heartbreaker/Lovehangover."Proving her voice can still withstand 90 minutes of singing her own difficult songs (Mariah songs are just not crafted for easy singing), Mariah put the exclamation point in an already fabulous vocal show with two of her biggest hits--"We belong together" and "Hero."Indeed, the show was a venue for Mariah to show her fun personality as it is a showcase of her vocal prowess. Throughout the night, Mariah talked to the audience endearingly as if she was just talking to her girlfriends, to the delight of the devoted fans.It seemed Mariah and Vegas are a match made in heaven. Last October, Mariah did two back-to-back sold out shows at The Pearls in Palms Hotel & Casino. Hmmm ... perhaps Mariah should give a second thought to the rumors about her setting up a long-term Vegas residency?Whatever the outcome is, to say that the "Angels Advocate Tour" was a success is an understatement. Truly, when it's Mariah's voice, music, and humor that take the centerstage, no note could possibly go wrong.Source: Ken of Mariah Carey Philippines

The videos will be available at all platforms starting Monday, February 1st.Mariah is in the second week of her six week "Angels Advocate" Tour across North America - her first major tour since The "Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, The Hits, The Tour" of August-October 2006. The opening act on the "Angels Cry" Tour is RydazNrtist, a new R&B group signed to Nick Cannon's NCredible Entertainment. (Since mid-January, the tour has played through MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, CT; Fox Theatre in Atlanta; Seminole Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, FL; and Fox Theatre in Detroit. Please see remaining tour dates below.)ANGELS ADVOCATE (and Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel) follow up Mariah's multi-platinum E=MC² (2008), and worldwide 10 million selling The Emancipation Of Mimi (2005). The Emancipation Of Mimi generated three Grammy awards (including Best Contemporary R&B Album), two #1 singles, and countless more honors during its 18-month chart stay. Soundscan's biggest-selling album of 2005, Mimi featured "We Belong Together" (Grammy winner for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song) and "Don't Forget About Us," Mariah's 16th and 17th #1 career singles respectively. They tied one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard Hot 100 history, Elvis Presley's 17 #1's.Three years later, Mariah surpassed Elvis when "Touch My Body" (from E=MC²) became her 18th #1 Hot 100 hit. "Touch My Body" spent two weeks at the top, Mariah's 78th and 79th cumulative career weeks at #1, which tied Elvis' long-standing all-time high of 79 weeks at #1, as calculated by Billboard. Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist in the 50 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits. The success of E=MC² brought total sales of Mariah's albums, singles and videos to more than 175 million worldwide, distancing her even further from the pack as the top-selling female recording artist in history.MARIAH CAREY - "ANGELS ADVOCATE" TOURJan. 27 Washington, DC DAR Constitution Hall Jan. 30 Boston, MA Wang TheatreFeb. 1 Philadelphia, PA Susquehanna Bank Center4 Montreal, Que.
Mariah's "hit" moments of the decade ('00s)

Mariah has successfuly completed two decades of festive entertainment for the whole world. While all of her achievements and awards are impossible to put in a single list, Mariah Carey Philippines compiled the ten things we think is the highlight of Mariah's decade--both career- and personal-wise. Check them out: 1. COMEBACK OF THE DECADE. It took a couple of years before Mariah finally and truly reclaimed her thrown in the pop world. But when she did go back to being the monster hitmaker that she is, the critics had to eat their words up. The "The Emancipation of Mimi" became album of the year in 2005 and put her back in the highest of pedestals where she belongs. It's the first time the "new" Mariah was really accepted by the public. The album spawned so many hit singles that Mariah went back into setting—and breaking—records once more.2. SONG OF THE DECADE. Mariah's "We belong together" is undisputedly the most popular song of the ‘00s, both in the US and the rest of the world. Not only was the song a monster at the charts, it was played everywhere—the malls, streets, beaches, mobile devices, every-freaking-where! This feat was further solidified when Billboard named the track as the "Most Popular Song of the Decade."3. MARIAH IN MANILA. Reeling from the damage wrought about by "Glitter," Mariah released Charmbracelet and its accompanying worldwide tour. It took 13 years since Mariah first came out into the music scene before she went to the Philippines. In November 16, 2003, Mariah finally held a concert in the Philippines at the Global City in Taguig, where a record 30,000 people attended. Her now famous line still resonates among fans: "There's a bug in the stage and it's scaring me." She stayed another week in Amanpulo in Palawan before resuming her world tour.4. MOST SUCCESFUL TOUR. It's no secret that Mariah isn't the biggest touring artist—she is known more for voice and her sexy ensembles. But the success of "The Emancipation of Mimi" couldn’t be ignored. The year after the album was released, Mariah took advantage of her rejuvenated popularity and launched "The Adventures of Mimi." The tour was different from the rest of her mostly-limited tour that she went back into playing big arenas instead of "intimate" (translation: small) venues. The accompanying DVD tour sold over 100,000 copies in the US, which garnered a Platinum certification from the RIAA.5. ACTING AWARDS. Mariah is no quitter. Despite the commercial and critical embarrassment she received from "Glitter" at the start of the decade, she pursued her acting career. This time, she the indie way, playing a waitress in "Wisegirls" and an aspiring country singer in "Tennessee." Though she garnered grate praise for both films, it wasn’t until her role in "Precious" that she got her first acting awards. Mariah received Supporting Actress of the Year award from the Capri Hollywood International Film Fest. She is also nominated at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards for Best Performance in a Cast.6. GRAMMY DROUGHT ENDS. After a decade of being nominated—and losing—at the Grammy's, Mariah added three more accolades to the first two she got during her debut year in the early '90s. She had a record 8 nominations during the Grammy's 2006 and performed an amazing rendition of "We belong together" and "Fly like a bird" at the ceremony.7. THE NAME BECOMES A BRAND. In the '90s, people see the name "Mariah" only when she has a new album out. It wasn’t until mid-00s that Mariah branded her name. This decade alone, she had released three bestselling perfumes—"M," "Luscious Pink," and "Forever." Mariah also did a groundbreaking deal with Pepsi and Motorolla wherein she created dozens of ringtones for them. She had also done commercials for Intel, Venus Gillette, AT&T, and most recently, the NBA.8. CHRISTMAS MAGIC EVERY YEAR. Mariah's Christmas classic "All I want for Christmas is you" was a hit when it was first released in 1994 to promote her holiday album, "Merry Christmas." But time had proven the song’s strength, crossing the 2 million sales mark in the US. The song even hit #1 in iTunes back in 2005. Most recently, a survey done in the United Kingdom showed that the Christmas track is the most played song in the UK during the Yuletide season.9. HAPPY MARRIAGE. Every time Mariah talks about her marriage, her eyes light up with a happy spark. In a secret marriage that surprised the world, Mariah married in the Bahamas in mid-2008, causing her to cancel several promotional stints for her album "E=MC2." Mariah and her husband had bought a house in Eleuthera and in Los Angeles. Talks of having a baby in underway.10. YET MORE CHART SUCCESS. Despite highs and lows this decade, Mariah managed to snatch new chart records here and there. This decade, Mariah surpassed Elvis Presley's record by having 18 #1 hits in the Billboard charts—making here the solo artist with the most number one hits in the chart’s 51-year-history—when "Touch my body" clocked in the penthouse for 2 weeks in 2008. Mariah had a total of four #1 hits, seven top 10 hits, two #1 albums, and another four top 10 albums in the United States.Source: Mariah Carey Philippines

A Mariah compilation, "The Ballads," also managed to debut at #10 earlier this year.2. TOP SELLING SINGLES. The lead single to Mariah's "Memoirs" was the head-thumping "Obsessed," which became Mariah’s 7th top 10 hit in the United Stated this decade. The single received a Platinum certification (the most for any female artist) from the RIAA, becoming Mariah's 12th since her music career started in the '90s. Two more Mariah songs managed to chart at the Hot 100—"My love" (#82) and "I want to know what love is" (#60).3. ACTING ACCOLADES. Mariah's role in "Precious" as Ms Weiss redeemed her as an actress. The Lee Daniels-directed flick gave Mariah her first acting awards—"Breakthrough Performance Award" from the Palm Springs International Festival; and "Supporting Actress of the Year" award from the International Film Festival. She received several other nominations from respected award-giving bodies. “Precious” went on to collect $40 million at the box office in the United States (as of press time).4. The Mariah Carey Fragrance Collection now has three names under its belt, including "M" which was released in 2008.7. GROUNDBREAKING PARTNERSHIPS. The release of "Memoirs" saw Mariah partnering with Elle magazine, as the latter created a special 14-page insert for the album that almost paid for the cost of recording the album itself. This is the first time a magazine sponsored the full liner notes and is expected to be duplicated by other artists. In Korea, fans can buy special Mariah mobile phones in which her latest album is already pre-loaded.8. MARIAH THE ENDORSER. Mariah appeared in several television commercials this year including one for Macy's, AT&T, and the NBA.

It's a feat 20 years in the making, achieved by no other than Billboard's ultimate queen. As if owning 18 #1 songs in the US isn't enough of an achievement, Mariah Carey also owns the most popular songs in the '90s and in the '00s, respectively. In 1999, Billboard crowned "One Sweet Day" as the most popular song of the decade (1990-1999), thanks to 16 consecutive weeks on top of the Hot 100 chart. At the close of the decade this year, Mariah Carey once more owns the most popular song (2000-2009) as "We Belong Together" tops the decade-end chart. The song spent 14 weeks at #1 in 2005.No ther singer had achieved such as honor and fans can only hope Carey continues her record-making and -breaking streak.
